Dentofacial Orthopedics at Parkland Orthodontics

Parkland Orthodontics is one of the top orthodontic clinics that specializes in different orthodontic treatment modalities and dentofacial orthopedics.  Most people are familiar with traditional orthodontic treatments like braces, Invisalign, etc.  However, most people know very little about Dentofacial orthopedics. If you are wondering what this treatment is, Dr. Onni Franco can help answer all your questions, as she is an expert in the field.

Orthodontics is associated with managing tooth movement; Dentofacial Orthopedics refers to guiding facial growth and development, mostly during childhood. The best time to get this treatment is during the formative childhood years, but adults can sometimes benefit from this treatment. If you live in Parkland, Coral Springs, Coconut Creek, or Margate, you can visit Parkland Orthodontics.  Our awesome orthodontist, Dr. Onni Franco, will perform a full checkup of your child’s mouth and determine when the right time is to begin his/her orthodontic journey.

Who is the right candidate for the treatment?

After examining the patient thoroughly, Dr. Onni Franco will let you know if your child is ready to start treatment.  Your child may be placed in the growth and development program at Parkland Orthodontics, where Dr. Onni Franco will monitor your child’s development in the absence of active treatment.  If your child does indeed need phase 1 treatment, i.e., before the eruption of their permanent teeth, a plan will be designed to guide the growth of your child’s jaw.

Adults can also be candidates for dentofacial orthopedics, but for them, the procedure will be surgical in nature. Unlike children, an adult’s jawbone is not in a growing stage. As such, adult patients need to undergo surgery to allow for proper jaw alignment after the teeth have been aligned.

To get the best results, we recommend that you schedule your child’s first orthodontic visit to our office by the age of 7. This is a perfect age, as children still have some of their primary teeth and their jaws are still developing, making it easier to guide their development. Your decision to visit the orthodontist will ensure that your child achieves the beautiful, functional smile that they can be proud of. Also, when dentofacial orthopedics are performed at an early age, it may help to prevent surgery in the future.
